THE DEVASTATION OF HURRICANE HELENE IN WESTERN SOUTH AND NORTH CAROLINA, AND EASTERN TENNESSEE HAS BEEN NOTHING SHORT OF CATASTROPHIC. Five days after the event hundreds if not thousands of people are missing, and hundreds of thousands of people (or more) are still without power. There are reports that power may not return to some places for a month! The roads in and out of some rural communities are either gone or impassable. Water supplies, food, and gas are running low. Please help if and where you can.

When I first heard this reading of Edgar Allan Poe’s “Alone” by Tom o’Bedlam I was blown away. I was unfamiliar with the poem, but Tom o’Bedlam is my favorite reader and so I gave it a listen. To be honest, the poem hit me hard. It identified something about my childhood that I knew vaguely in some subconscious way but had never before identified. Poe did that for me. Mrs. Redneck can confirm that I’ve listened to this poem dozens of times in the last week.
