My apologies to all of you, and to paid subscribers in particular, for not posting for the last few weeks, but I’ve been traveling quite a bit recently (five days in Mississippi and five in New England in the last three weeks), and, as some of you might also know, I’ve been involved in a wee academic controversy that has absorbed virtually all of my time. (I will undoubtedly have more to say on this at some point in the future.) That issue is coming to a close, so I am back in the saddle and will resume publishing my series of long-form essays on the foundation, principles, and institutions of a free society. In the meantime, here’s a double issue of Dumb and Dumber.

This week the three largest public school districts in the U.S. announced that they are in the middle of a massive and continuing problem: record low enrollment numbers.
The New York Times reported that since the fall of 2019 enrollment in New York City’s (NYC) public school system—the nation’s largest district—has dropped by about 50,000 students or 4.5%. The numbers are even worse in the nation’s second-largest public school district, where the Los Angeles Times reported the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) lost a record of more than 27,000 students or 6.0% of its enrollment since 2019. The third-largest district’s numbers are just as bad in Chicago’s public schools (CPS), where WTTW reported enrollment is down nearly 25,000 students or 3.0% over the same time.

Out of the three hundred signers, ninety were higher education organizations, according to Harvard’s Jeremy Pivor of the Chan School. He is one of the three listed authors on the Lancet article.
“Planetary health,” Pivor told The College Fix via email, “is a solutions-oriented, transdisciplinary field and social movement focused on analyzing and addressing the impacts of human disruptions to Earth’s natural systems on human health and all life on Earth.”
The declaration encourages health practitioners to “[a]dvocate for patient- centered policies that advance planetary health, including public access to health services as a human right, and incorporate solutions and community services beyond the clinic.”
Medical professionals should “incorporate planetary health concepts and and values into the main curricula and professional codes of conduct for all future health practitioners.”
